When the 49ers gave up three first-round picks and a third-round selection to move up to No. 3 in the 2021 NFL Draft, the team hoped that they would land their quarterback of the future.General manager John Lynch was among those in the 49ers' front office who decided that Trey Lance was the team's best option with the selection. But in the wake of trading Lance to the Cowboys for a fourth-round pick in 2024, Lynch wasn't afraid to admit Thurman Munson Jersey that his brain trust had erred with their selection.MORE:We took a shot, and it didnt work out," Lynch said on the broadcast of the 49ers' preseason game against the Chargers on Friday. "We own that. We take accountability for it."49ers GM John Lynch on trading QB Trey Lance to the Cowboys: Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) Indeed, Lance's two seasons with the 49ers should be cla sified as a disappointment. He spent most of his rookie season as the backup to veteran starter Jimmy Garoppolo but also dealt with a troublesome finger injury that hindered his development. In his second season, he was granted a chance to start for the team but lasted just five quarters before a broken ankle ended his season.Entering the 2023 season, Lance was expected to attempt to push Brock Purdy for the starting job after the rookie's impre sive finish to the 2022 season. Instead, Lance slipped behind Sam Darnold on the depth chart and that ultimately led him to be traded to the Cowboys. He finished his 49ers career with a 2-2 record and completed54.9 percent of his pa ses for 797 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions with the team.IYER:Despite Lance's struggles, however, Lynch remains confident that he can develop into a quality NFL quarterback.I think his story is still very much unwritten, Lynch said. Im excited for Trey. Dallas stepped up and really wanted him, and they came after him. I think its going to be a great landing spot for him."Of course, that begs a question: if Lynch is so confident in Lance, why didn't the 49ers just keep him? He still has two years remaining Brett Gardner Jersey on his rookie contract, after all, and trading him only saved the team about $2.4 million in cap space for the 2023 season.Lynch explained that the decision to part with Lance was le s an indictment of him as a player and more about the way that the 49ers quarterback battle played out over the last two seasons.I can tell everybody: It wasnt for lack of effort on Treys part or on our part that Derek Jeter Jersey it didnt work. Circumstances took hold," Lynch said. "He struggled through injuries, and this team is ready to win. We like our quarterback room. We like Brock Purdy a lot. We like Sam Darnold, and we like Brandon Allen. So, we wish Trey all the best in Dallas. Well always care about that young man and admire his work ethic and the person that he is."MORE: It's understandable that the 49ers would be comfortable rolling with Purdy after the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft had a terrific rookie season. He completed 66.5 percent of his pa ses for 1,943 yards, 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions in eight starts (playoffs included) and posted a 7-1 record.Still, that the team is giving up on Lance so quickly is something of a surprise. And certainly, the 23-year-old will hope to get more of a chance to play with the Cowboys than he did with the 49ers.
